"Dear Ask Alison,
I recently got arthritis in both knees, which can be painful when I go up and down steps. In particular, I had, before this occurred, booked a trip to Machu Picchu which has a lot of steps, any ideas to help with the pain and not cancel the trip?

Stress management is key! In his book, Arthritis and You, Dr. Naheed Ali says that experiencing new sights, places, and culture can relieve stress and is "highly recommended whether a person is healthy or suffering from any ailment, not only arthritis (page 224).”
He also says that tension and stress can make the inflammation symptoms of arthritis worse, and recommends relaxation methods such as Yoga. I visited Robin Buck, certified yoga trainer at Jane's House of Well-Being to learn about relaxation through movement and breath.
